Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
What is dental anesthesia?
Dental anesthesia refers to medication used to control pain and anxiety during dental procedures. We currently offer anesthesia via IV sedation that is administered through a vein, offering deeper relaxation and amnesia (forgetting parts of the procedure).
Is dental anesthesia safe?
Dental anesthesia is very safe when administered by a qualified dentist anesthesiologist. We have extensive training and experience in safe anesthesia practices and use state-of-the-art monitoring equipment during procedures. A thorough medical history review will be conducted beforehand to ensure your suitability for anesthesia.
Why should I chose in-office dental anesthesia over a hospital setting?
In-office dental anesthesia offers several advantages:
Convenience: Procedures can be completed in a familiar environment, eliminating the need for a hospital visit.
Faster recovery: You'll typically recover more quickly from dental anesthesia in the comfort of your dentist’s office.
Cost-effective: In-office anesthesia is often less expensive than hospital anesthesia.
Before and After Your Procedure
Before Your Appointment
Will I be able to eat or drink before my appointment?
Typically, we recommend fasting for several hours beforehand (usually nothing to eat after midnight and only clear liquids up to 2 hours before). Specific instructions will be provided based on the type of anesthesia planned by your anesthesiologist.
What medications should I take on the day of surgery?
Please consult with us beforehand about any medications you're currently taking. We'll advise you which ones to continue or hold on the day of your procedure.
Do I need to wear anything specific?
Loose-fitting clothing with short sleeves is recommended for your comfort during the procedure. Typically an IV is placed in your arm, so short sleeves are recommended. We also recommend to bring a jacket as patients can experience being cold after waking up from anesthesia.
During Your Appointment
What will happen during the procedure?
After a consultation and initial checks are performed by the anesthesiologist, an IV will be inserted for medication administration, the sedation will begin, and our team will closely monitor your vitals throughout the procedure.
After Your Appointment
What happens after anesthesia?
You'll be monitored in a recovery area until most of the anesthesia wears off. We'll provide instructions on post-operative care, including pain management and diet.
Will I be able to drive myself home?
No, for the types of medication used during anesthesia, you will not be able to drive yourself home. Arrange for a friend or family member to take you home after your procedure.
How long will it take to recover from anesthesia?
Recovery time varies depending on the type of anesthesia used. For moderate sedation, you should be back to normal relatively quickly. Deeper levels of anesthesia may require longer recovery time, with some grogginess lingering for a few hours.
